Zea Mays Printmaking/Color Reduction Woodcut

Color Reduction Woodcut

Woodcut is a wonderfully direct and accessible form of printmaking, which yields a range of imagery from bold and simple to detailed and textural. The process of bringing an image to life through carving is both soothing and meditative.

In this tutorial you will learn how to carve and print a color reduction block, in which progressive layers of carving and color printing yield rich, vibrant prints.

By cutting away more and more of a single block in between each color printing, the previous colors are revealed as more wood is cut away from the surface. By the end of the process, the block is sometimes "reduced" to almost nothing.

This video tutorial guides you through everything you need to make a multi-color reduction woodcut, from preparing the wood and transferring the image to the block, to carving, registration and printing both on and off of a press.
